[page 179] 474. ALFRED MOORE7 (Edward1, Hugh2, Theophilus3, Theophilus4, Sarah5, John J. Moore6), eldest son of John Jackson and Jane (Warner) Moore, was born in Quakertown, 12 mo. 16, 1845, died in Philadelphia, 11 mo. 22, 1923. After completing his education he entered the office of his uncle William H. Levick, in Philadelphia, and studied law. He continued his law studies in the office of Nathan S. Sharpless, and was graduated from the Law Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1868. He practiced his profession for many years. In 1871 he became associated with the Hon. D. Newlin Fell, which connection continued until the appointment of Judge Fell to the Common Pleas Bench in 1877. In 1882, and again in 1885, he was elected by Common Council as one of the Trustees of the Philadelphia Gas Works. In 1892 he was appointed by Mayor Edwin H. Stuart, a member of the Department of Charities and Correction, and reappointed in 1892 by Mayor Charles F. Warwick, during which time he was chairman of the Bureau of Charities which had immediate charge of the Almshouse and Hospital. In 1900 he was appointed a member of the Board of City Trusts, which position he was well qualified to fill from his past experience. Alfred Moore had always been an active and conscientious member of the Society of Friends, holding many appointments of trust and responsibility. He remained single, living most of the time in Philadelphia, but continued to maintain the homestead of his parents and grandparents in Quakertown.

479. HOWARD M. JENKINS7 (Edward1, Hugh2, Theophilus3, Sarah4, Charles F. Jenkins5, Algernon S. Jenkins6), only child of Algernon S. and Anna Maria (Thomas) Jenkins, was born at Gwynedd, Montgomery County, Pa., 3 mo. 30, 1842. He was educated at the widely known Gwynedd boarding school kept by Hugh Foulke. He taught school for one winter term in New Britain Township, Bucks County, and in 1862 in partnership with Wilmer Atkinson (whose sister he later married) he bought the Norristown Republican and conducted it and its successor, the Norristown Herald, with which the Republican was merged in 1864, as editor, until 1868. In the latter year he removed to Wilmington, where he and his partner, Wilmer Atkinson, found the Daily Commercial, the first daily newpaper published in the state of Delaware. They sold out this paper in 1877, and Howard M. Jenkins was connected with the Philadelphia Times and the Village Record of West Chester, until 1881, when he became editor of the American (Philadelphia), with which he was connected until 1891. He had, however, purchased the Journal (Philadelphia) in 1884, and upon the merging of the latter with The Friends’ Intelligencer in 1885, he became chief editor of the combined [page 180] paper and continued to fill that position until his sudden death as the result of a fall at Buck Hill Falls, Pa., 10 mo. 11, 1902. He had returned to his native township, Gwynedd, settling near his ancestral home in the centre of the township.

In addition to his work as a newspaper editor and contributor to a number of journals of high standing, Howard M. Jenkins did a vast amount of miscellaneous literary work. In 1884 he wrote “Historical Collections relating to Gwynedd,” a local history of his native township, a model of its kind, which reached a second edition in 1897. Among his other writings which have attracted attention are Volume 1 of the “Memorial History of Philadelphia,” “The Family of William Penn,” considered the authority on the family of the Founder; a large number of essays, historical sketches, and pamphlets; and “Pennsylvania: Colonial and Federal,” in three volumes, which was not entirely completed at the time of his death and was published in 1907. Howard M. Jenkins was a delegate to the National Convention which nominated General Grant and was the candidate of his party for the United States Senate in the state of Delaware. Interested in education, he was an important member of the committee which founded George School and for a number of years he was the manager of Swarthmore College. He was the founder and first President of the Buck Hill Falls Company, and occupied numerous other positions of trust and civic effort. He married, 3 mo. 16, 1865, Mary Anna Atkinson, daughter of Thomas and Hannah (Quinby) Atkinson, of Upper Dublin Township, Montgomery County, Pa. She was born 12 mo. 5, 1844.

480. GEORGE HERBERT JENKINS7 (Edward1, Hugh2, Theophilus3, Sarah4, Charles F. Jenkins5, Algernon S. Jenkins6), son of Algernon S. Jenkins by his second wife, Alice Ash Davis, born at Gwynedd, 5 mo. 9, 1871, is a resident of Gwynedd and a practicing attorney at Norristown and Philadelphia. He married, first, 10 mo. 11, 1893, Jessie Stockton Allen, daughter of George Woolly and Harriet (Stockton) Allen, of Philadelphia. She died 12 mo. 11, 1895. He married, second, 6 mo. 11, 1903, Mary Schofield Ash, daughter of Samuel Shinn and [page 181] Sarah Jackson (Schofield) Ash, of Philadelphia. She was born 4 mo. 13, 1875.

482. MARY JENKINS7 (Edward1, Hugh2, Theophilus3, Sarah4, Charles F. Jenkins5, William H. Jenkins6), only daughter of William H. and Catharine Hallowell (Richards) Jenkins, born at Gwynedd, 4 mo. 13, 1856, married, 4 mo. 26, 1877, Evan Jones Ambler, son of Andrew and Mary (Johnson) Ambler. (See No. 85, Chapter XXIV). He was born at Ambler, Pa., 1 mo. 8, 1841, and died there as the result of an accident, 8 mo. 16, 1893. The town of Ambler was built on his father’s farm. He opened a store there and operated it until his death. They had no children.

483. WALTER H. JENKINS7 (Edward1, Hugh2, Theophilus3, Sarah4, Charles F. Jenkins5, William H. Jenkins6), third and youngest child of William H. and Catharine Hallowell (Richards) Jenkins, born 5 mo. 21, 1859, succeeded his father as the proprietor of the store at Gwynedd, representing the fourth generation in that position. He, however, disposed of it in 1906 and took charge of the Friends’ Book Store at 15th and Race Streets, Philadelphia, retaining his residence in Gwynedd. He married, 2 mo. 27, 1884, Esther P. Lukens, of Montgomery County.

Children of Walter H. and Esther P. (Lukens) Jenkins: 688 Sarah Styer, b. 7-25–1887; m. Horace Mather Lippincott, son of Robert C. and Cynthia (Shoemaker) Lippincott, born 4-20–1877. He is the author of a number of historical books. They reside in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia. 689 William Lancaster, b. 12-12–1888; a graduate of Swarthmore College, was appointed in 1914, United States Consul at Guadaloupe, West Indies, but before sailing he was transferred to Liverpool and Dublin, where he was of much assistance to the survivors of the Lusitania. In 1915 he was Consul at Moscow, Russia, where he was stationed until 1916, when he was transferred to Trebisond, two years later to Odessa, Russia, remaining there one month. He was next appointed Consul to the Madeira Islands, and is now (1922) Consul at Mairobi, British East Africa. [Mairobi sp?] 690 Horace Carroll, b. 1-23–1890; a graduate of Swarthmore College, was appointed in 1918 to the United States Consulate at Genoa, Italy. On his return, he became instructor of languages at the University of Pennsylvania.
