THOMSON FAMILY - ADDENDA - Beginning on page 561

The THOMSON family, which became connected with the Richland families by the marriage of John Thomson with Abigail Roberts in 1773, probably was founded in Pennsylvania by David Thomson of Horsham Township, Montgomery County, whose will, dated March 9, 1749/50, was probated May 19, 1750. This will names his wife Sarah and his children Ann Thomson, William, David and Elizabeth, and son-in-law, Zacharias Faris. His son William is named as executor.

WILLIAM THOMSON, possibly the son of the above named David, was born in 1715, and married, 3 mo. 15, 1745, Catharine Shoemaker, daughter of George and Christiana (Brown) Shoemaker. She was born in Cheltenham Township, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) County, in 1712. At or about the time of his marriage, William Thomson located in Cheltenham Township, where the remainder of his life was spent. He was a farmer and he died on his farm on Tacony Creek 3 mo. 23, 1781. His will, dated 3 mo. 3, 1779, probated 2 mo. 8, 1782, devised two plantations, one of 40 acres, and the other of 100 acres, both in Cheltenham Township, to his son John, who was named as executor. His wife Catharine died 6 mo. 15, 1786.

1. JOHN THOMSON, son of William and Catharine (Shoemaker) Thomson, was born 12 mo. 22, 1750, in Cheltenham Township, and died 9 mo. 28, 1838, and was buried in Cheltenham Graveyard. He was a farmer in Cheltenham Township, and was prominently identified with public affairs in that section. He married at Richland Meeting 3 mo. 25, 1773, Abigail Roberts, daughter of Thomas and Letitia (Rhea) Roberts, of Milford Township, Bucks County, Pa., where she was born 7 mo. 28, 1751. She died in Cheltenham 7 mo. 15, 1843. (See No. 19, Chapter XLI). The signature of John Thomson, with a p, is as it appears in his father’s will. [page 562]

2. HANNAH THOMSON2 (John1), daughter of John and Abigail (Roberts) Thomson, born 12 mo. 15, 1773, died 8 mo. 6, 1827. She married, 5 mo. 10, 1797, Thomas Shoemaker, of Cheltenham, son of Isaac and Ann (Roberts) Shoemaker. He was born 6 mo. 24, 1762, and died 2 mo. 11, 1837. She was his second wife. He had married, first, on 9 mo. 8, 1785, Mary Shoemaker, and after the death of Hannah, he married a third time, on 11 mo. 12, 1829, Margaret Bird.

3. THOMAS THOMSON2 (John1), son of John and Abigail (Roberts) Thomson, born in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County, Pa., 9 mo. 30, 1775, died there 12 mo. 26, 1825. He married in 1799, Jane Jarrett, daughter of William and Ann (Lukens) Jarrett, of Horsham Township, and a sister to Hannah Jarrett who married William Penrose. (See No. 36, Chapter XXXVII). She was born 12 mo. 18, 1775, and died 10 mo. 9, 1847.

She married, 4 mo. 7, 1808, Samuel Rowland, of Cheltenham, son of Benjamin and Mary Rowland of Cheltenham, and of an old Bucks County family. 7. ANN THOMSON3 (John1, Thomas2), daughter of Thomas and Jane (Jarrett) Thomson, born in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County, Pa., 3 mo. 19, 1800, died 5 mo. 3, 1885, married 5 mo. 18, 1826, Jacob E. Jarrett, of Horsham Township. He was born in 1789, and died 7 mo. 23, 1864. He was a son of Joseph and Rachel (Edge) Jarrett, grandson of John Jarrett, Jr., and his wife Alice Conard, and great-grandson of John Jarrett, a native of England who settled in Horsham Township, where he married about 1715, Mary Lukens, and settled on what has been known since as the “Jarrett Homestead Farm.” Children of Jacob E. and Ann (Thomson) Jarrett:

10. SARAH THOMSON3 (John1, Thomas2), daughter of Thomas and Jane (Jarrett) Thomson, born in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County, Pa., 8 mo. 8, 1807, died in Philadelphia 3 mo. 3, 1885. She was for many years an acknowledged minister of the Society of Friends, and travelled extensively in that work. She married, first, 4 mo. 8, 1830, Anthony Williams, of Whitemarsh, son of Joseph and Ann (Hallowell) Williams (see No. 22, Chapter XIX), grandson of Anthony and Rachel (Jarrett) Williams, great-grandson of Anthony and Sarah (Shoemaker) Williams, and great-great-grandson of John and Ellen (Klincken) Williams, who were among the first settlers in Cheltenham. Anthony and Sarah (Thomson) Williams settled in Buckingham, Bucks [page 564] County, on their marriage, and resided there until 1836, when they returned to Whitemarsh, where he died 10 mo. 4, 1844. Sarah married, second, 2 mo. 1, 1849, Jesse Shoemaker, son of Thomas and Jane Shoemaker of Whitpain Township, Montgomery County, Pa., where he was born 3 mo. 31, 1815. He died at Dundas, Canada West, 6 mo. 19, 1854. Sarah married, third, 5 mo. 1, 1856, Cyrus Betts, of Solebury, son of Isaac and Tamer Betts, born 1796, died 9 mo. 8, 1884. 11. JOHN THOMSON3 (John1, Thomas2), son of Thomas and Jane (Jarrett) Thomson, born in Cheltenham 10 mo. 1, 1810, died there 10 mo.2, 1890. He was a farmer and lived all his life on the Thomson homestead at Cedar and Church Roads, Cheltenham. He married, 3 mo. 8, 1838, Caroline Jones, daughter of Amos and Alice Jones of Cheltenham. She was born 10 mo. 24, 1814, and died 1 mo. 14, 1877. Children of John and Caroline (Jones) Thomson:

12. ABIGAIL THOMSON3 (John1, Thomas2), daughter of Thomas and Jane (Jarrett) Thomson, born in Cheltenham 5 mo. 28, 1813, died [page 565] 2 mo. 23, 1868, in Langhorne, Bucks County, Pa. She married, 4 mo. 15, 1841, John Wildman, Jr., of Middleton Township, son of John and Mary (Knight) Wildman, and a descendant in the fourth generation of Martin Wildman who came from Yorkshire, England, and settled on the Neshaminy Creek near Langhorne. John Wildman was born in Middletown Township, Bucks County, Pa., 2 mo. 10, 1813, and died there 3 mo. 2, 1902. He was a farmer in Middletown Township until 1850, and thereafter lived in Langhorne, and was interested in banking and insurance business. He was the first chief burgess of the borough of Attleboro, Bucks County Contributionship, the oldest fire insurance company in the county. He was one of the founders of the Peoples National Bank of Langhorne and its president until his death. He filled many other positions of trust and honor and was highly respected in the community in which he lived. He married, second, in 1871, Sarah Ann (Taylor) Warner, widow of Abraham Warner. CHARLES WILLIAMS4 (John1, Thomas2, Sarah3), son of Anthony and Sarah (Thomson) Williams, born 5 mo. 13, 1833, in Buckingham, removed with his parents to Chester County in 1847, returned to Buckingham when twenty-one years of age and located on a large farm devised to him and his brother by their grandfather, and later in life, removed to a farm in Wrightstown, near Pineville, where he died in 1918. He married 4 mo. 12, 1860, Hetty Ann Eastburn, born 1 mo. 10, 1834, daughter of John and Sarah W. (Smith) Eastburn, of Upper Makefield, Bucks County, Pa. 32. EDWARD H. WILLIAMS4 (John1, Thomas2, Sarah3), son of Anthony and Sarah (Thomson) Williams, born in Buckingham, Bucks County, Pa., 9 mo. 3, 1835, reared in Chester County, but returned to Buckingham with his brother Charles when of age and on his marriage settled on an adjoining farm where he died 12 mo. 10, 1911. He married, 11 mo. 19, 1857, Emma Cottman, daughter of William and Helen Cottman of Abington.

K. Williams & Co. He married, 3 mo. 10, 1859, Margaret J. Butler, of Montour County, Pa., daughter of Thomas and Mary A. Butler. She was born 12 mo. 7, 1833, and died 12 mo. 16, 1893. 40. THOMAS THOMSON4 (John1, Thomas2, John3), son of John and Caroline (Jones) Thomson, born in Cheltenham Township, 2 mo. 28, 1842, was a farmer in that township, living on Cedar Road. He died 2 mo. 3, 1908. He married, 2 mo. 24, 1874, Mary Eyre, daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (Knight) Eyre, of Newtown, Bucks County, Pa. She was born 12 mo. 15, 1846, and died 9 mo. 9, 1920. She was an active and influential member of Abington Monthly Meeting, and prominent in the Quarterly and Yearly Meetings of the Society. Children of Thomas and Mary (Eyre) Thomson:

DAWSON THOMSON4 (John1, Thomas2, John3), son of John and Caroline (Jones) Thomson, born in Cheltenham Township, 2 mo. 1, 1858, removed when a young man to Dawson, North Dakota, and later settled in Pasadena, California, where he still resides. 76. ELIZABETH E. WILLIAMS5 (John1, Thomas2, Sarah3, Charles Williams4), daughter of Charles and Hetty Ann (Eastburn) Williams, born in Buckingham, Bucks County, Pa., 7 mo. 18, 1863, died 3 mo. 29, 1893. Brown, whose first wife was her sister Elizabeth. They lived on a farm in Wrightstown Township for a number of years and later lived in Philadelphia. They have no children.
