~ NON-ASSOCIATORS

History of Bristol Borough - The arms of non-associators were collected to prevent them being used against the Americans, the militia were ordered to reinforce Washington and the owners of cattle were directed to be ready to remove them at least, 5 miles from the river.

The term Non-Associators was applied to American colonists who refused to support and sign "military association" charters. They were not affiliated with associators, or would choose instead, to pay a fine and suffer possible retaliation.

WARWICK TOWNSHIP

John HOUGH, second son of Jeseph [sic] and Elizabeth (WEST) HOUGH, lived on the 414 acre tract conveyed to him by his father in 1761, as before recited, in Warwick township. Was probably not a member of the Society of Friends, though he adhered to their principles. His name appears on the roll of "Non-Associators" in 1775. He married, October 31, 1767, at St. Michael's and Zion Church,

...meet at the house of John Bogart on the 20th of July, 1775 While assembled at Bogart's.

This meeting was important also in the fact that the lists of all officers of the different districts were furnished the committee, with the names of associators and non-associators. (For full and complete list of associators and non-associators see Pennsylvania Archives, Second Series, Vol XIV, pages 143, 227.)

Associators, 1,688; non-associators, 1,613. I have received some of the association rules, but am afraid the signing will go heavily, chiefly arising from the Quakers and others who chuse it staying at home and doing nothing."

When the committee met at Bogart's tavern February 27, 1776, a petition was presented asking the committee to extend the age limit of associators from 50 to 60 years,"As there are many able-bodied men bt;tween the ages of 50 and 60 years, possessed of large estates, who are entirely exempt from military duty and expense, the tax upon non-associators is considered merely as an equivalent for personal services, and the associators have not  compensation for their arms and accoutrements, not to mention the danger they will be exposed to when called into actual service, your Petitioners pray that an additional tax be laid upon the estates of non-associators proportionate to the expenses of the associators necessarily incurred for the general defense of property.

...All the arms held by the non-associators were ordered purchased by the committee and put into the hands of Henry Wynkoop. Orders were issued to have the battalions in readiness if required to march immediately.

Mennonites in the American Revolution

Mennonites found themselves reluctant participants in the war effort. Occasional militia excesses, arresting and parading pacifists through the streets, reminded them that their conscientious objection was merely tolerated at best. The special tax on Non-Associators remained in force and other taxes and militia fines mounted up. By the war’s end Mennonites were paying twenty times their normal taxes in wartime fines. They also contributed wagons and teams, cattle, horses, grain, and whatever the army needed, sometimes willingly and sometimes by distraint
