Chapman's Pointer Cat
Chapman Vanluvanee is fond of shooting English sparrows with a small caliber rifle. He has a handsome gray cat that always accompanies him in the capacity of a retriever. When Mr. Vanluvanee halts beneath a tree and elevates his rifle, the cat always locates the game, and generally nabs his sparrow the moment the bird touches the ground. Another peculiar trait in the animal's nature is that he will not touch any other variety of bird, having cultivated an exclusive taste for English sparrows.

A Cat goes Shooting
Bucks county has a curiosity in the shape of a wonderful cat which is ever an object of interest to the people of Doylestown, where pussie resides. The Bucks County tabby is a hunter. She does not deign to lie in wait for plebeian rats and mice, but hunts with her master after the manner of a setter or pointer dog. The famous hunting cheetahs of the East are not more intelligent than this cat. Pussy's gray sides are fat and cleek, made so by daily dinners of plump sparrows, which she "sets" or "points" while out with her master and his rifle.
Chairman Vanluvanee is the proud owner of this cat, and being a middle-aged bachelor, all his affections are centered in his rifle puss gives vent to her joy by rubbing against his legs or clawing at his trousers to hasten his movements. Armed with his eapon and accompanied by his cat Mr. Vanluvanee goes out almost daily in quest of game. Trotting along at her mater's heels puss keeps a sharp lookout for sparrows. The twittering of one of the birds instantly attracts her attention, and fastening her eyes upon it she assumes a crouching position and becomes rigid as stone, ecept a slight movement of the tail.
In this attitude she waits patiently the cract of the rifle. A successful shot sends her bounding upon the bird the moment its body touches the ground. Having secured her prey the cat runs home with it, and immediately returns for more sparrows. The noise of the game and people passing along the streets do not disturb or annoy her. She is indifferent to everything but the sparrows and her master's movements.
Pussy is too well trained to ever flush her game. She also knows whether her master has missed his mark, never chasing after a bird unless badly wounded and upon the ground. How the cat became a hunter her owner does not know. No effort has been made to teach her. The animal has the greatest affection for Mr. Vanluvanee and is very persistent in ther efforts to accompany him whenever he leaves his shop. - Philadelphia Press.
