The Richland Library Company founded in 1788.

In the Votes and Proceedings of the House of Representatives of the Province of Pennsylvania for 5 December 1745 appears the following: "Ordered, That the Clerk send to England for the best Edition of the Statutes at large, for the Use of the House, and also for some large Maps (one of North America) to be hung up in the Assembly Room." By this action, Benjamin Franklin, Clerk of the Assembly, became instrumental in creation of the Pennsylvania State Library.”

The Richland Library was founded as a lending library and was the source of reading materials for many generations. For many years the library held its headquarters in the Liberty House. In 1788 Quakertown was known as “The Great Swamp” or “Richland”. There was no post office, the mail was carried by hand and stagecoaches between Philadelphia and Allentown. There were very few books and fewer newspapers. The 1790 census shows 147 houses and 890 residents. The library was fostered for many years by the community and served a worthy purpose. The library is no longer a lending library but is a research facility that preserves local history and culture for genealogical and historical research.

In 2013 the Bucks County Genealogical Society dissolved after many years of promoting and facilitating family research. The research library and the rights to many of the publications have been donated to the Richland Library. Currently these items are being cataloged and made available for research. In 1997 the Bucks County Genealogical Society began publishing The Journal, The Richland library continues publishing as a biannual digest dedicated to local history and genealogy.

The Richland Library is the repository of the Quakertown Community School District “QCSD” records, memorabilia, attendance records, pennants, jackets, and class yearbooks. The QCSD collection includes an extensive collection of The Recall, Quakertown High School's yearbook, starting with the first issue in 1939. Numerous issues of The Quaker Challenge, the student literary magazine, are also available, first published in 1935.

The Richland Library Company is a great place to explore and research. The many resources include hundreds of genealogies, local history books and several art galleries. One of the galleries features retired teacher Calvin H. Ruth’s paintings.

The library is open Wednesdays - 1 to 4 and Saturdays - 9 to 12. 215.536.5636
