NEW BRITAIN

New Britain was organized in 1702-3.  The early settlement of German Mennonites in New Britain led to the organization of a church of this denomination. Mennonites were almost the first religious sect on the banks of the Delaware. About 1662 some of the followers of Menno Simon came from Holland and settled at Whorekill, where the Dutch made them a grant free from all impost and taxation for twenty years. When the Delaware fell into the hands of the English, two years afterward, these unoffending people were robbed of their goods and many were sold as slaves to Virginia. The Mennonites of Bucks county are without written history. There are churches in New Britain, Rockhill, Milford, Springfield, Bedminster and Doylestown.

Colonel Jacob Reed, an officer of the Revolutionary army, died November 2, 1820 in his 91st year and Robin, a black man, died in 1802, at the age of ninety six. The enumeration of 1784 gives New Britain seven hundred and sixty-four inhabitants, in 1820 the population was 1,474. Thomas, Morgan, James, Meredith, Marshall, Kelley, Evans, Gaul, Rees, Kirkbride, Edwards, and Kennedy were early families.

Sept 13 1779 Edward Doyle, New Britain Twp. Died about 16 years ago. Wf Mary, Children, William, eldest and Edward. exrs, sons Joseph and daughter Rebecca, (wf of Richard Freeman, had a daughter, Elizabeth) Daughter Elizabeth Rees died before her father. Joseph and Richard Freeman dispute how William is settling the estate.

May 30 1820 Caesar Freeman, Warwick twp. Sarah Freeman is admin.
