MOTHER AND TOTS ENTER COUNTY HOME

Less than five years ago John HARTZELL, a Sumneytown resident, led one of the village's young women to the altar as his bride, with every promise of loving and caring for her as only a devoted husband should. Last week, the bride of five years, and now the mother of three small children, deserted by husband, bereft of parents or friends, heartbroken and penniless, entered the County Home with her infants by her side. To her charity is the only solace, the only hope in her hour of illness and need. To the three little ones the bounty of the county is the only shield against starvation, and within the home they must remain until they can look after themselves, unless some utsider will take pity on them and their mother.

PASTOR'S RESIGNATION NOT ACCEPTED

The consistories of the Old Goshenhoppen Reformed charge met at Keelor's church last Saturday and refused to accept the resignation of their pastor, Rev. J.L. ROUSH. Previous to the meeting congregational meetings had been held by the Keelor's, Old Goshenhoppen and Sumneytown churches and each of these congregations decided unanimously not to accept the resignation. The consistory of the Pennsburg congregation had circulated a petition against the acceptance of the resignation. This was signed by 157 members. The majority of the consistory of this congregation, armed with the petition, were in attendance at the meeting last Saturday and the meeting was a unit in refusing to accept the resignation of Rev. ROUSH.

It was the Romans who first used January 1 as the beginning of the year in 153 B.C. New Years Day was the day after the great Carnival, where much consuming of liquor, eating and rowdy dancing had taken place. In the Carnival atmosphere a mock King effigy would be slain and all the 'sins' of the past year would be forgiven.
